Last weekend we had the first big race in 2018, the EFRA GP in Fiorano.
It was for me also the very first race at all this year. I never was really competitive on that track, so I was a bit cautious with my expectations.
Thursday morning the track was still wet and so the practice was limited to three runs in the afternoon. I was very happy with the car and engine right from the start and the laptimes were a bit surprising for me to be honest. But a very pleasant one.
I did some adjustments to my Viper 988 car to get a bit more rotation in the hairpins, mainly rear camber-link angle, but that was more or less it.
Friday practice was also cut short due to a bad weather forecast for Sunday. The organizer wanted to finish all racing on Saturday.
To cut a long story short, I qualified 15th, a 11th and a 12th place were my best results, both actually with 2 mistakes. But i was quite happy to qualify directly into the semi between all the rockstars of RC.
I was quite confident that I had a chance to proceed because I could do 5 minutes which would save me one fuelstop.
Unfortunately I had a bad start and lost some places and was stuck behind slower traffic. At one point I had a small crash trying to overtake and my body was bend and touching my front wheel. My pitcrew fixed it at my first stop but I lost a few seconds and I came short by only three seconds in the end.
Compared to last years, I was very happy with my pace. That’s the good thing and something to built on.
Thanks a lot to my sponsors, Picco, Sanwa, RunnerTime, Xceed, Arrowmax and of course Serpent. And thanks to my team members for that family feeling we have! And very special thanks to my wife and mechanic Jill Salven for her support. And, of course for the excellent pit work.
See you all soon.
