Race report by Mustafa ALP
Directly after coming from Turkish Onroad Gas Nationals in İzmir, which was dominated by Serpent, we headed to Istanbul for a Nitro Offroad Buggy race; Buggyburn 2012. This race was organised by Ciddiamatör, and the race was held in Snappy Raceway.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, we built our cars in Serdar’s Evilhobbyshop and we hit the track on Thursday and Friday. As I didn’t have any offroad experience before, I struggled a lot at first, but after practising more and more, I got used to it. On Saturday I had a day off to enjoy the wonderful city.
Sunday started with free practises, followed by controlled practises and qualifiers and then main finals. We had 4 Serpents present at the race and 3 of us qualified for the 30 minute A-Main final; Serdar Aytemiz, Ahmet Tekelioglu and me.
In final I started slowly, knowing that I can not push the car to the limits without risking making mistakes. Alain Sarafyan and Deniz Aksüt, who were very experienced offroad drivers quickly created a gap in first few minutes. I kept calm and drove my own race in 3rd position. Shortly after, Deniz had some mechanical problems which costed him a couple laps, and I was in 2nd position. Top positions didnt change too much after that, and I finished 2nd. Serdar had a bad start and fell back at first, but he made his way up to fifth position at the end. Ahmet had some mechanical problems which resulted a disappointing 9th. Our pit crew, Ateş and Ufuk did a fantastic job, doing the fastest refuelings of the weekend.
I learned a lot in my first offroad experience and looking forward to have more offroad races. I want to thank Snappy Raceway owner Işık Alem and Race organisator Fatih Büyüktaş for making this race possible and my sponsor Serdar Aytemiz(EvilHobbyShop) for providing Serpent and Xceed products.
