It was the 2nd edition of the ENC this year, but my first time in Hockenheim. So it was a complete new track for me – large and very fast. Practice went very well with staying on 7th place after finishing the last runs. My 966TE was quite good from the beginning and only small changes in rear toe-in, ride heights and tire hardness were needed to run good laptimes.
We had 3 qualification runs on Saturday, but first and second run were really bad because of engine becoming leaner during the heat. This may be caused by a special pipe cleaner used Friday to Saturday overnight as I did not have this first two days. 3rd and last heat put me with a safe run on 6th place and position 1 in 1/2B final.
Sunday was finals day. I decided to stay with soft tire version – 30 in front and 32 in rear – for ½ final. This was ok, but the track had a lot more traction this day. After winning the ½ final I decided to switch to 32/35 for the main final and a strategy with one tire change. Having a bad start with a flamed out engine caused by a locked clutch I returned with a gap of a lap in the race. My 966TE was nearly perfect and I could close the gap and catching one by one and putting me on 5th place at half time and tire change. I managed to get in fourth position with having a look of Mack third place, but unfortunately I made a mistake in the fast chicane before the straight. So I stayed in fourth place at the end.
