Race weekend report.

Malaysia: Shepherd cup…race series (2)…Johor Malaysia.

Venue Niko Racing Circuit, Johor Malaysia.
Date: 27 November 2011
This is my first race with the 966 TE.
Practice on Sat was OK.My car is abit slippery due to track condition was dusty but still can drive quite fast.
Then come the rain and dry and rain again, so is very difficult to set the car properly for the race conditions.
So i just leave the car as is and see how things turn out on race day.

Come race day, track was wet from early morning shower.
With the help from Niko (track owner) and crew, track was ready for practice then follow with 3 round of qualifying.
My car was ok to drive buy abit oversteer, so i come back and do some minor adjustment for rear camber and toe,
car was better so start Q1….

Q1. Manage to set 3rd place overall, still oversteer abit, so adjust front roll bar from flat to 45deg
Q2. Manage to set 2nd place overall with better lap times, car now is much better and traction was better too
Q3. Manage to TQ overall, car was great, so time to check the car over and charge batt… ;) winking

Final.
The final was very exciting. top 3, big names Mizan, Suhaimi and me was very close to each other.
Swaping leads for refuel, flame outs and mistakes. At around 20min mark i was in the lead then the rain came…
So organizer call off the race and follow the qualifying result as the final result.
So i’m the TQ and champion for the race ;) winking

Thanks to my sponsor
MAX Racing product that supply me with great products such as shock oil, bearings, lube, manifold gasket… ect
Serpent Malaysia for the great support…

UK: Branson wins and takes BRCA title 2011

Kyle Branson wins British season finale

Kyle Branson wins British season finale

The 9th and final Round of this years BRCA 1/8th circuit Championship was hosted by the Mendip raceway in Weston Super Mare. With all the main drivers present, the fight was to secure 3rd place in the overall GT1 Championship after the title was decided in favour of Kyle Branson at the previous round with a perfect score of 6 wins from 8 rounds. Tim Wood was also in an secure position in second but relinquishes his title which he had owned for the last 3 consecutive seasons. The GP2 title for drivers with a lower driver skill ranking would also be decided over the weekend with Jason Thompson having the chance to overtake current leader Greg Fairlie.

Saturday was dry with good levels of grip to allow all the drivers to fine tune their cars and engines. It was noticeable that the quickest drivers were the usual suspects of Mark Green and Kyle Branson. The closest rivals were Andy North, Neil Diver, Richard Hicklin and Tim Wood. The gaggle behind was led by Irish man Clive Connolly, Daniel Bancroft, Pete Hastings, Andy Hastings, Jason Frost, John Carr and Dan Jones. All these drivers had a good chance of making the main final.

We arrived at the Track Sunday morning to find dry tarmac which was a surprise due to some overhead dark clouds. After the drivers briefing, a minor shower came down and prevented any meaningful practice in heat order. Round one started with a dry track but the grip levels remained low for a short period but this didn’t stop representative times from being registered. In Heat 5, Kyle Branson hit trouble which gave Mark Green the opportunity to TQ the round which he duly took advantage of. In Round 2, Mark Green increased his advantage with the first 20 lap result of the day and Kyle Branson also posted a time which moved him into the top 10. Round 3 saw Kyle begin to dominate the proceedings with a 20 lapper which was just 0.01 sec slower that Mark’s previous result but in the final round, Kyle did enough to ensure TQ with a result that was 1.6 sec quicker than Mark who dropped to third after being beaten by team mate Tim Wood after he completed 5 minutes without a fuel stop.

The top 10 were as follows:
1. Kyle Branson – Serpent / Sirio – 20 Laps 313.32 secs
2. Tim Wood – Serpent / Xceed – 20 Laps 314.91 secs
3. Mark Green – Serpent / Novarossi – 20 Laps 314.98 secs
4. Clive Connolly – Mugen / Novarossi /ATS – 19 Laps 302.44
5. Andy North – Mugen / IDM / Contact – 19 Laps 302.54 secs
6. Neil Diver – Shepherd / IDM – 19 Laps 303.38 secs
7. Andrew Hastings – Shepherd / IDM – 20 Laps 303.89 secs
8. Richard Hicklin – Serpent / Novaross1 / 19 laps 304.61
9. Jason Frost – Serpent / IDM – 19 Laps 305 secs
10. Daniel Bancroft – Motonica / VOX – 19 Laps 305.37 secs

The final started cleanly with 8 cars due to DNS for both Mugen cars of Andy North (Interference) and Clive Connolly (Seized engine bearing). Up front, it was Kyle, Mark and Tim who were slowly pulling away from the rest of the field. The first casualty upfront was Mark Green who suffered an engine cut but he managed to continue. Tim Wood was the next to go after 15 minutes when he stopped on track. Up front Kyle started to back off at the end of the main straight due to his car starting to bottom out over the bumps but on lap 92, he lost control and hit the concrete kerb which destroyed the front wheel. After a Marshall quickly recovered the car back to the pits for a check over and a new front tire, Kyle regained the race with his lead now down to just 1 lap. Mark Green at this stage was charging through the field and passed Neil Diver towards the end of the race to finish a strong second.

The final results are as follows:
1. Kyle Branson – Serpent / Sirio – 110 Laps
2. Mark Green – Serpent / Novarossi – 109 Laps
3. Neil Diver – Shepherd / IDM – 109 Laps
4. Andrew Hastings – Shepherd / IDM – 108 Laps
5. Richard Hicklin – Serpent / Novaross1 / 93 laps
6. Tim Wood – Serpent / Xceed – 55 Laps
7. Jason Frost – Serpent / IDM – 52 Laps
8. Daniel Bancroft – Motonica / VOX – 37 Laps
9. Clive Connolly – Mugen / Novarossi /ATS – DNS
10. Andy North – Mugen / IDM / Contact – DNS

With his third place finish, Neil Diver secured third place in the championship.

Thanks to Andy North for the report.

California Golden State Series Round #3
Oct. 8-9, 2011
GLARCRC in Los Angeles, Ca.
We travelled to the 3rd leg of the Golden state series this past weekend in Los Angeles, Ca. USA. The weather was perfect, and there was a great turn out of nearly 70 racers to compete in 1/8 open and 1/10 touring nitro. I normally don’t race both classes at the same event, but we thought we would have some extra fun and put my Serpent 733TE out on the track because it had run so well at the Nationals a few weeks before. In 1/8 my 966TE had not been so lucky at the Nationals and had taken a big crash which needed repairs. Unfortunately we struggled with the 966 all weekend, trying to find the right setup and get a good feel back in the car.
In the 1/10 class, my Novarossi powered Serpent 733TE was awesome all weekend! The car handled so well on the low traction parking lot, that we did not change one thing on the setup. I used the same setup as the Chipotle G.P. which you can find on the Serpent website. After 3 rounds of qualifying we had the TQ spot by 8 seconds, with fellow 733 racer Walter Diaz 2nd. In the final unfortunately, we stripped a rear belt dropping us out of the race while leading…. too bad as the car was super good.
In 1/8 we had exactly the opposite result as 1/10…… we struggled with the car all weekend, only finished 1 qualifier in which I was unfortunately taken out by a lapped car while on TQ pace leaving me to qualify 7th, and had to race the final extra hard with a car setup that I was not happy with. In the end though, we had a good strategy for the final (pitting at 5 minutes when most others pitted at 4 minutes, and going the distance on 1 set of tires that were still strong at the end when others changed and some ran out of tires) and the car was solid throughout the 30 minute final. After making my way through most of the field and getting past Mike Swauger as he had some of his own issues, I found myself in the lead with about 10 minutes to go. Everything went well to the finish and was able to get the win!
It just goes to show that you never know what may happen in racing. Things can’t always be perfect, but if you stick with it and do your best, good things will come…… and best of all, you will have a GREAT TIME doing it!!
Next race up for me will be 1/10 nitro at the Castle Classic in Union City, Ca. USA. Hope to see you there, and good luck to everyone wherever you may race at. Thank you to Serpent, Serpent America, Novarossi, Xceed, Tornado Fuel, Spektrum, Protoform, A-main Hobbies, Empire Racing, Dynamite,  Avid Bearings.
Till next time………

USA Nats onrtoad: Paulie B’s Return to Serpent Shows Positive Results!

Friday, September 30th, 2011

USA: ROAR On-Road IC Nationals, Chaplin, CT, September 25, 2011

After many years running for Kyosho America’s USA Team, Paolo “Paulie B” Becattini’s return to Serpent 966 TE this year, shows positive results and a promising future. Traditionally Paulie B ran in the RAOR sanctioned Masters class but felt it was time to step it up and run with the big-boys in the Open class. He demonstrated that he could certainly hold his own as he bumped his way up into the semi-finals beating-out some of USA’s finest on-road racers. A rough start due to technical issue in the Semifinal caused a 3 ½ lap late entry from the pit area, requiring some major overtaking and focus and almost taking Paulie to the big final.

Paulie B wants to thank Paolo Morganti, Joaquin DeSoto of Serpent America, all the Serpent teammates and of course Michael Salven for personally attending this event and supporting.
