FSORS Round #2

Fort Lauderdale,Fl

Mills Pond

Feb.11,2012

It all started on a cold morning in Tampa,FL around 3:30 A.M. as we began our 4:30 minute adventure into the dragons Lair….Mills Pond… This area of Florida is the densest Florida has to offer for skilled drivers that race on a regularly in the Nitro 1/8th class. You can always expect that there will be good racing and a challenging track.

Mills Pond has some of the better clay in our series line up. They typically have higher speed tracks that prove to be a little more challenging when setting up the car. This years layout was really nice with a lot of high speed and slower speed downhill off camber turns. These types of sections always are a little tricky to find steering and stability. The weather was quite cold as well in the 60’s. In this case you will have to adjust a few things on the cars dampening, spring and sway bar combination to try and balance not only the weather but track layout.

This season has gone quite well for me running both classes. It is tough though, simply because you have no time to glue tires, change the cars and prepare for your next heat race. This event only had 7 heats of drivers. The turnouts have been quite low this season, due to the increased interest in the FORCE series as well. Either way it makes for some good racing.

I started out with my typical setup in both classes and found that my Cobra truggy was a little pushy and loose as well as my buggy. Finding grip is always a challenge in cooler temperatures, but also when the track is hard but damp. Clay is best when its totally dry and the sun is baking down on it. Either way, I have to make adjustments to my oil to account for the temperature. Since the last race we ran was 10 degrees cooler, I went slightly thicker on my oil. Now my Cobra buggy needed a little more love than my truck did, so I also opted for a stiffer front spring. I went to a pink from Red.

In the second round my buggy and truggy both improved which was quite nice and helped me secure the fastest times and TQ position.

In the finals I ran Hole shots on the truggy and Blockades on the buggy, both in M4 compounds by Proline. The tires worked really well and I was very happy with the performance and traction. I think the Proline tires have been really good in the conditions this years series is being run in for the one day format. I have to say it has improved my results. In the truggy final , I lead start to finish with an almost perfect run. In the buggy final, I didn’t run quite as well as I would have liked but overall it was a pretty decent run as well.

I want to say thanks to the Mills Pond crew for doing a great job on getting the track nursed back to health after the rain..

Also, great job to all the Serpent drivers that made the A finals and also the two winners that used our product to win the Sportsman class. With 9 out of 12 pro buggies in the A final, that was really awesome to see. I am happy that so many people really enjoy our Cobra buggy/truggy and the best is yet to come for you guys. We have so many things yet up our sleeves.

Diff Organizing

With the introduction of gear diffs to 1/10 ep Touring cars I suddenly found myself with a lot of diffs sitting in my pit box.  It is convenient to have more than 2 diffs (I have 6) as gear diffs take quite a longer time to rebuild compared to the ball diffs.  And once they are build finding which has 1000 and which one is 1200 is almost impossible.

Well,  I decided to end the confusion in my Pitbox and started marking my Diffs.  Permanent marker is an option but with oil and ever changing diff oils it becomes caos after a while.  So I started carving marks on my diffs.

I then created an Excel sheet incase I forgot what I put in them.  You can protect this using PVC coating then you can mark and write on it with permanent marker.

Greece: Costas with Cobra Truggy wins national Camps

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

Last weekend was held the last round of the National Champs 1/8 off road buggy and truggy on the new design Arena track near Athens, Greece. For team Serpent we had 4 drivers for buggy and 1 for truggy. Costas Agrafiotis participated in both categories with his new Serpent cars for first time.

In truggy category Costas was very fast from the qualifiers and missed the TQ by 1 second after a stop and go! In the main final after a spectacular race with the second placed driver he took the victory in this first race  with new Serpent Cobra Truggy.

In buggy category there were lot of  experienced drivers in a new track with Costas to drive for the first time the Cobra 811.  On qualification Costas trying to find a good setup and has taken 8th place on main final after success at the semi final.

After 45 minutes Costas finished on 8th place not bad for a driver that had not practiced a lot the new design and with a new car. Congratulations to all Serpent drivers!

Phillipines: Serpent offroad Cup

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Sept 25,2011 , Junkyard Racetrack. Serpent cup was held with a graet success and support from the  local  and out of town players  and from DOGBONE HOBBY SHOP.

A special guest driver from Netherland Serpent Onroad champion driver, Julius Kolf, was also in town to join the race.

There were 3 mains on buggy and 2 mains on truggy with 14 players on each main with a bump up on the finals . Aside from trophies that were up for grab,  a Brand New Serpent buggy Kit  was also being raffled, a special thank to Dogbone Hobby Shop for sponsoring and making this race so much fun.  The qualifying started around 9am with the track being a bit muddy n bumpy due to the rain a day before the raceday.  A very exciting event , Serpent having  morethan 20 entries on buggy n truggy , followed by Mugen and having for the first time a JQ buggy kit driven by the veteran  driver Raffy Abello who TQ’d the overall qualifying.  Not a really good day for some top drivers like jordan go, clemen pancho and raffy abello as these drivers encountered different mechanical problems during the finals.  Raffy with his JQ buggy had to retire early after 1 lap with a mechanical trouble, jordan go with his X2 truggy had to retire with a diff problem and so was clemen  pancho with his Serpent buggy.  With clemen n raffy being sidelined during the buggy main, it was jordan who controlled and led the entire Amain finals  followed by  WERKS engine sponsored driver Nani Tagle, Dennis Lucindo Serpent .

Now on Truggy AMain finals, jordan with his X2 who led early on the race retired after few minutes and it was up to serpent drivers edward, dennis, rico , jopo and mugen driver Jody.  About 20 mins left in the finals ,jody on first followed by edward about 1-2 seconds behind runout of fuel and that ended his bid for a podium.   Ended the mains with Jody mugen on first, denis serpent second and third felix serpent . Congratulations guys.

The much awaited raffle PRIZE of 1 unit Serpent Buggy Kit was   won by Serpent Driver DEXTER  SULLERA.  Congratues.

23-9-2011

For the 6th round of the Dutch Truggy cup we headed to the lovely south of Holland.

In Helmond they have a nice facility with a 1:10/1;8 and 1;6 scale off-road circuit all covered with artificial grass.

The track is technical but and tricky but still has a good flow.
The weather for an exception was nice and sunny and we were promised a dry day and 23 degree Celsius temps.

Since the last wet weather race I checked the cars bearings on the front and rear coupler but did not noticed any problem. We only refilled the shocks with 300 cSt Mugen oil. Rest of the car in KIT configuration.

For the first qualification I opted to use the LRP Kamikaze Super Soft tyres.
Made some small mistakes and reached 9 laps.
Only problem I noticed larger right hand turns compared to left.

So in Q2 I set the servo saver spring a tad harder (a few turns).
A little better but still right hands turns were less then left hand side.
Again 9 laps in a little better time.

I checked the EPA on the steering and this was at maximum for both sides.

Q3 I used AKA City Blocks in Medium compound and could improve again my result but still 9 laps as maximum and still the left hand corners could be taken much sharper.

After talking before the finals to an other Serpent driver he said to make the right hand side EPA a little larger even we already set it at maximum. So we did.

We only changed the clutch bearings in the pause.

In the ½ B-main final we found the new EPA setting cured our difference in left and right hand side turning.
Remember not to overshoot the EPA setting too much!
We reached the A-main final even with a flame out at place 8 th.

At the start of the A-main final I managed to steer around some car pile ups and was at place 3 after corner 3. Then I made a mistake too and place 12 was the result. In the 30 minute final I opted to do a 9 minute refuel strategy. But for some reason the engine flamed before the first refuel stop. So although I was in the mid field again I dropped to the last running spot again.

Finished 9th overall. Was happy with the car, engine lacked some bottom power compared to the rest of the competition. As said no mechanical problems in the car.

The A-main final was made up with 6 snake cars out of 12 finalist!
So all attending Snake drivers were in the A-main final.

The A-main final was won by Kevin Manders with his first truggy race using the Cobra S811 Truggy powered by Alpha Plus engine. He was on charge and unstoppable.

Current table leader Kevin Cornelis also in the A-main had a flame out too.
TQ spot went to Bas de Konink but he some servo and servo saver problems using the snake.
Other Snake driver Jan van Dijk (Mr. JVD) finished 4th
Erik Aries had clutch bell problem stripping it, he finished 7th
So with 6 snakes in the final and a win the Snake factory can be satisfied that the victories at this side of the ocean are no problem.

Next race is in 4 weeks time.

More to come for sure as the championship will be decided there……maybe in favor for a snake…….
